Community Projects: Education

Within Lân fan taal is of course a place for ‘mienskip’ (means community) projects! Below are the projects that are supported by the special LFT subsidy scheme and are related to ‘education’. They are all public-oriented cultural activities with special attention to multilingualism.

Education – Primary education

Why does language exist? What can you do with it? The Lân fan taal educational programme is based around the necessity of language. And, not to forget: the love of language! Primary school pupils can discover what the body says, use the amazing “talkboard” by illustrator Charlotte Dematons, and take part in a multilingual musical!

Are you aware of how important arable farmers are for your daily meal? The potato weeks in Het Bildt will highlight this with surprising literary projects and events. One fantastic element is a poetic exchange with Valetta, which is the other European Capital of Culture in 2018!

Obe – Visitor centre Lân fan taal

A brand new building forms the entrance to Lân fan taal: Obe. You will be welcomed here as a new “resident” and you can immediately (and playfully) get to work with language. Experience the art installation by Tim Etchells and find out what else there is to do!

Language Garden

From 31st of March to 28to of October 2018, the Prinsentuin in Leeuwarden will be transformed into the Language Garden, full of adventures for children from 0 to 12 years, their older brothers/sisters and their parents/grandparents. Playground features, interactive installations, exciting routes: there’s plenty to do for families and school classes!

Language billboards by children

Main program

From the end of 2017, billboards written and designed by children will appear in Leeuwarden. They are the result of “Taal yn Byld”, a project by NHL University of Applied Sciences and eight primary schools. Children of various nationalities design the billboards in their own language. Youth performance for schools

“Jolifanto bambla ô falli bambla”. Say what? Is this Spanish or Afrikaans? No, these are the first two lines from Karawane, a 100-year-old sound poem by the Dadaist Hugo Ball. Hugo and other Dada poets wrote this ‘sound of illogic’ to make us look at things differently. To let us listen.

In Leeuwarden, a gigantic “Goldberg machine” that has never been seen before will be constructed: an energetic chain reaction of installations and human actions. It will wind through the city in a figure-of-eight shaped route. And you can actively contribute, either as a resident or visitor!
