Would like to hear how various languages sound? And different varieties of Frisian? An extensive app lets you discover this and learn a lot about languages. It’s indispensable for language enthusiasts, language experts and teachers!
Actually, everyone is multilingual – and Frisian alone has many variants. This is an intriguing phenomenon that the University of Groningen has investigated during the project “Stimmen fan Fryslân”. It is inspired by the British project “Voices Recordings”, in which as many varieties as possible of British speech were recorded.
The core of “Stimmen fan Fryslân” is an extensive smartphone app with associated website. Here you can find a growing number of languages and dialects. You can also record and add spoken language yourself. You can find and share knowledge about multilingualism within an online community. There are also blogs and a language game.
Within the framework of “Language Files”, renowned researchers will give lectures in 2018 about the medical, technological and social applications of linguistic research. Linguists will also visit secondary schools.
Online and at various locations in Friesland
The online applications will be launched in (late) summer 2017.
