What an exciting idea: being “posted”, as a writer in a small/minority language, to another area in Europe with a small language, to work, blog and perform! This has been happening since 2016 as part of the literary exchange project Other Words/Oare Wurden. In 2017 and 2018, you can spot international writers “in the wild” in Leeuwarden.
The five participating cities/regions are San Sebastián (Basque Country), Dublin (Ireland), Bitola (Macedonia), Maribor (Slovenia) and Leeuwarden (Friesland). Each year, two Frisian writers travel abroad and two guest writers travel to Leeuwarden. They have one thing in common: a passionate desire to put their language in the spotlight. They write, perform and establish contacts with fellow writers and artists in the host country. And this leads to very special encounters. They incorporate their experiences into stories for the Other Words website.
In the autumn of 2017, the Aromanian singer-songwriter Zarko Naumovski will stay in Leeuwarden and a Basque writer will also visit the city. The writer Hein Jaap Hilarides from Het Bildt will travel to Slovenia during this period. From April-June 2018, a Slovenian writer will stay in Leeuwarden and a Frisian writer will travel to Ireland.
Now until the end of 2018
Locations of the performances will be announced later. You can (already) follow the writers who are working in the Basque Country, Ireland, Slovenia and the Republic of Macedonia online.
Tresoar (Leeuwarden, Friesland), Donostia Kultura (San Sebastian, Basque Country), Foras na Gaeilge (Ireland), Association for Contemporary Art X-OP (Maribor, Slovenia) and Youth Forum (Bitola, Macedonia).
