We believe Leeuwarden-Friesland will be an indispensable addition to the current cities of literature network – based on our knowledge of, and plans for, stimulating a strong climate for writing and translation. In applying for the City of Literature designation we will also further benefit from what we achieved over recent years with Lân fan taal.
Carrying the title “City of Literature” means that we will include literature in many different languages in our long-term plans and policies. We believe that this is the roadmap to an open and inclusive community.
Our candidature focuses on the following topics:
- a better climate for writing and translation
- international cooperation and promotion
- embracing multilingualism
- stimulating enjoyment of language
- combating low literacy
- visibility of (the Frisian) language
A small team has recently transcribed these topics into a programme. The principles, objectives and plans were sent to UNESCO in June 2019 in a comprehensive application form. At the end of 2019 we will know whether we have been awarded the title. Many more cities can be added to the circle of literary cities. The competition is fierce. The number of members has grown steadily in recent years, with strong representation from cities in central Europe. However we are convinced that we have a real chance with our solid experience and excellent plans!
