The residency programme coordinates, facilitates and brings writers in contact with local artists, knowledge bases, heritage, and the general population.
Every year, various literary organisations arrange international exchange programmes for writers, both in the city and the province in general. The residency programme coordinates these initiatives to centralise cooperation activities. New initiatives are organised within the auspices of the programme, and the programme also works together with the existing residence programmes of the Literary Fund and the current Cities of Literature.
The current residence locations are:
- City of Leeuwarden – locations in the Lân fan taal (Land of Language), where all literature knowledge centres can be found.
- It Gysbert Japicxhûs in Bolsward, birthplace of the spiritual father of the Frisian language and literature.
- Skriuwersarkje, a cottage in Alde Feanen nature reserve.
Residencies are linked to translators, and translators to residencies, so translators not only work closely alongside resident foreign writers, they also take part in exchanges abroad.
